Alyse,
I try to lift and/or run 3 times a week. I take supplements (protien shakes/bars, creatine sometimes) in order to get my protien intake. I'm on the run constantly at work and find it hard to consume what I should be eating. Should I be worried? Also, are multivitamins adequate substitutions for eating the right amounts of fruits/vegetables? thanks!
First of all, it is much more likely that you are consuming MORE protein than you need, rather than less. Most Americans (even vegetarians) get enough protein in their diet via food alone, and do NOT need to take protein supplements in order to meet their protein needs. On the other hand, it is fruits and vegetables that many are lacking in their diets. In regards to taking a multivitamin in place of eating fruits/vegetables, this is NOT a good idea. There are numerous phytochemicals and other beneficial compounds in fresh produce that you will not be able to get from a supplement. There is NO substitute for a well-balanced, healthy diet.
