Question Hi I did not see any articles on IBS symptoms and what foods to avoid. Is dairy a culprit? I don't always have symptoms but somethings will trigger it at times. Tea with milk at times for example. And grains and some fruits I read somewhere are also troublesome. Is there nothing to permanently help with symptoms such as burping besides avoiding these foods?
Alyse The following are all associated with worsening symptoms of IBS: Large meals, bloating from gas in the colon, medicines, chocolate, milk and other dairy products, alcohol, drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, black tea, or cola, irritating foods, especially raw vegetables and fruit skins, corn, dried fruit, nuts, fruit juices, especially citrus juices (dilute juices), high fat foods (fried, creamy, breaded, cheesy, ground meat), sweeteners (high fructose corn syrup, sorbitol, xylitol, aspartame), and stress, conflict, or emotional upsets. If the milk triggers your symptoms, it is a good idea to avoid it. Other dietary changes to improve symptoms include: drink 6-8 glasses of water a day, especially when experiencing diarrhea; drink between meals; aim for 1/2 to 1 cup per hour; try a water bottle with a "sports cap" to diminish air swallowing; room temperature is best, avoid carbonated beverages, especially soda (if they cause gas and discomfort, avoid chewing gum and eating too quickly; aim for 20-30 chews per bite; break down food as well as you can before it reaches the digestive tract, eat smaller meals more often (three small meals with two snacks), eat low fat meals that are high in complex carbohydrates, such as whole grain breads, rice, cereals, and fruits and vegetables, and aim for a high fiber diet (Insoluble for constipation and soluble for diarrhea).
